Top 10 DB2 Geek Highlights of 2012

December 20th, 2012 - by

Wow, what a year! The DB2 Geeks have certainly been busy during the past 12 months. Before we head home for the holiday season we thought we would share our 2012 highlights with you.

1 – For Triton Director and IBM Gold Consultant Julian Stuhler, 2012 began with a trip to the Silicon Valley Labs in California, the home of DB2. Julian was thrilled when he received an invitation to the annual zIM Bootcamp, normally only attended by IBM internal staff. Find out what Julian got up to in sunny California while Britain froze.

2 – Shortly after the bleak midwinter Iqbal Goralwalla, Triton’s Head of DB2 Midrange Services wrote an extremely well received technical article ‘DB2DART – Hints and Tips for the DBA’. The article explained how DB2DART could be one of the most powerful tools in the DBA’s kit bag and how it could help increase DBA productivity in crisis situations. You can read this excellent article in full here.

3 – In March we were thrilled when IBM announced that Julian Stuhler and Iqbal Goralwalla were recognised as IBM Information Champions for another year. Read all about it!

4 – Back in April we posted our most viewed news item of the year! Have you read “DB2 for z/OS: 23 Things to Think About NOW!”? The article, a condensed version of Julian Stuhler’s white paper “How to Have a Happy DB2 CM Day”, generated fantastic feedback when it appeared on The article consists of a checklist of 23 areas to be worked on in preparation for the move to DB2 10 Conversion Mode. If you haven’t read it you can do so here!

5 – During the heat of the British summer Iqbal was voted top guest in ‘The Top 20 Most Popular DB2 for LUW Episodes for The DB2Night Show™’. Iqbal wowed the audience when he presented a show on DB2 LUW 9.7 Fixpack “Pearls”. A staggering 100% of the studio audience said they learnt something. View a replay of the show, or find out about Iqbal’s forthcoming appearance on The DB2Night Show™.

6 – As autumn approached our first customer upgrade to DB2 10.1 for LUW took place and was hailed a huge success. Our client, Holiday Extras is now reaping the benefits of the new DB2 10.1 functions! Find out more about DB2 10.1.

7 – In September we were delighted to announce the expansion of our Remote DBA service. Remote DBA is now available to clients anywhere in the world! Our renowned service has enabled many businesses to benefit from stable, secure management for all components of their DB2 infrastructure without the associated staffing costs and technical issues.

8 – The DB2 Geeks had a fantastic time back in November when they attended the annual IDUG EMEA Technical Conference. Triton Directors Paul Stoker and Julian Stuhler both presented at this year’s event. Two of the DB2 Geeks were also actively involved throughout the year as IDUG Volunteers. Iqbal was appointed a member of the Conference Planning Committee and helped shape, plan and coordinate the event alongside fellow committee members. Julian, a previous IDUG President served on IDUG’s Content Committee, helping to produce, gather and curate technical content for IDUG’s worldwide events and publications.

As if the Geeks weren’t busy enough we also hosted a ‘Beat the Geek’ drinks reception with partner DBI Software. By entering our DB2 crossword competition guests had the opportunity to win some top prizes and collect a free limited edition DB2 Geek t-shirt. A great night was had by all. Read about our IDUG adventures or take a look at our ‘Beat the Geek’ gallery. Do you recognise anyone?

9 – The DB2 Geeks have also been keeping busy throughout 2012 by providing consultancy for the UK’s second SAP on z Core Banking Implementation. Look out for more exciting SAP-related news in the New Year.

And finally…back to winter

10 – In more recent news Triton Consulting has been officially selected as an IBM Enterprise Linux Business Partner. You’ll be hearing a lot more about our service offerings and the business benefits of the Enterprise Linux Server in 2013.

With new releases of both DB2 for z/OS and DB2 for LUW slated for the next 12 months, we’re very excited about 2013 and looking forward to sharing plenty more geek wisdom. In the meantime, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
